Over the past few weeks I have been hearing more and more buzz about Charlotte Tilbury’s new mascara, Legendary Lashes ($32 USD), which just launched this month. I tried to avoid it for as long as I could, occasionally visiting the website, and reminding myself that I needed a new mascara like I needed a hole in the head. As I’m a fan of a few beauty gurus on YouTube, I came across a review by Tati Westbrook of Glam Life Guru of the Charlotte Tilbury Instant Look in a Palette and Legendary Lashes mascara, followed by a review by Wayne Goss. Both of them raved about the mascara, and I finally gave in and placed an order.
Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara has been a favorite over the past couple of years, and I had recently been loving Maybelline Lash Sensational mascara (a great drugstore dupe for the Better Than Sex). The pictures on the Charlotte Tilbury website and seeing the application in the reviews looked similar to these formulas, and had me pretty convinced that I would love the formula of Legendary Lashes.
The Charlotte Tilbury website allows you to choose three samples at checkout. I decided to try the Magic Night Cream, Magic Eye Rescue, and Charlotte’s Magic Cream, as I had heard mixed reviews and wanted to give them a shot (I loved the Eye Rescue and Charlotte’s Magic Cream, but the Magic Night Cream did not work for me.)
Now, on to the main event!
I’m a fan. A BIG fan. The Legendary Lashes does for my lashes what the Better Than Sex mascara does when I apply it over the Lancôme Cils Booster XL (which is a great combination, BTW). Seeing as the Better Than Sex retails for $23 USD and the Cils Booster retails for $25.50 USD, the Legendary Lashes is a steal. Relatively speaking. If I can get as good, if not better, application in one step rather than two, I’m sold.
Now. The formula. It’s exactly what I look for in a mascara- slightly waxy, buildable, lengthening, volumizing, slightly clumpy (in a good, dramatic way) just separating enough, and holds a curl well. It’s fantastic, but I’m fully expecting to like it much better in about a week. It’s nothing against the formula as it is, I’ve just found that most mascara formulas are a little too wet for my liking until a couple of weeks in and it dries out slightly. This is not a natural, defining, feathery lashes mascara, so I would not recommend it if that is what you are looking for.
As for wear time, it lasts throughout the day, but did smudge slightly under my eyes. Not a big deal though, as it cleans up easily, and it’s not waterproof or smudgeproof, and doesn’t claim to be.
Overall, this is a huge win. If you want dramatic, voluminous, blackest-black lashes, I highly recommend you give this a try. If this is any indication as to the quality of the rest of the Charlotte Tilbury line, I can’t wait to get my hands on her other products.
I’ve been using this on and off for the past couple of months, and while I still love how it looks when it applies, it gives me raccoon eyes like no other mascara I’ve tried. Granted, it’s been extremely hot and humid, which is when it misbehaves the most, but I’ve been disappointed with how it wears. I’m hoping CT will take a look at the formula and improve its lasting power. Until then I’ll have to retire it, at least until summer’s over.
